If you are playing games on it when taking it home, its more understandable to want a PC, but would be a pain in the butt to lug around. Currently I see a number of my friends who commute packing surface pros, but the key is still lightweight with good performance. Nowadays there are lightweight PC laptops that are equivalent, so when the air dies, I may replace it with one of those. The Mac was larger but still weighed less than the 11inch PC laptop I was carrying around. I was a late buyer, but had become really fed up with the netbook I had at the time. Almost everyone I knew at the time who commuted bought the Mac air because it weighted less but still had good performance. The Mac air was so lightweight it sometimes feels like it's not in my bag, and that was the main selling point at the time I bought it - I was traveling a lot and needed a lightweight computer that wasn't sluggish and crappy and made my commute easy. It's great for traveling because it is so lightweight. As a result, the Mac is almost like netbook - i travel with it, use it for word processing, and surfing the net. However what the Mac won't do is run my work programs well. With the PC there is the wait for the program to load, and the response time is a bit sluggish compared to the Mac, even with a better processor. However, when I turn on the Mac, it's on immediately, open a program, it pops right up. The Mac is a 4 year old 13 inch air with maybe 8GB ram, the PC is a quad core processor with 32 GB ram.
